This article explains how to install the Java 8 Development Kit on Ubuntu 16.04 Server using the APT package manager. Other commands and packages may be required for other distributions.

Java is used by many applications, especially for some games such as Minecraft. The following command is sufficient for the installation of Java. sudo apt-get install default-jdk

Since root privileges are required, the password may have to be entered.

[sudo] password for user:

As soon as the installation is completed, the installed Java version can be displayed by using the following command:

java -version
